Nuclear bomb tests ended over 20 years ago but the legacy of the test areas still remains and will do for hundreds or thousands of years.
The IPPNW (International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War) estimate that by the year 2000 some 430,000 cancers were caused by atmospheric (above ground) nuclear bombs tests, from 1951 to 1962. (The Partial Test Ban Treaty of 1963 put a stop to above ground tests, fortunately.) Eventually, as many as 2.4 million deaths worldwide can be attributed to the nuclear fallout from atmospheric atomic blasts, according the IPPNW. It was a truly crazy time. Is the human species mad?

Nuclear fallout showers ships

The U.S. Navy exploded nuclear weapons at Bikini Atoll, deliberately destroying navy ships, some of which sank to the bottom of the Pacific ocean. Water infused with radioactive fallout coated the remaining ships with radioactive calcium, which could never be properly decontaminated after the Bikini tests. Some ships nonetheless returned to the San Francisco Bay Area.

A damaged radioactive Bikini test ship was used as a classroom for sailors, some of whom later expressed concern about radiation exposure.

summary: Nicholas Kane, then an Air Force lieutenant colonel, attended the radiological training school on Treasure Island (San Francisco Bay) in 1948. He described the training ship, the USS Independence, in a letter to his family: "It was scarred and twisted and misshapen from the atomic bomb tests at Bikini."
