Patty Ameno's One-Woman Anti-Nuclear Crusade

Plutonium and Uranium-233 were buried in an open field and left untended for decades by NUMEC (Nuclear Materials and Equipment Corporation), the nuclear bomb-making company (later purchased by Babcock & Wilcox). "NRC does not have information that would allow it to unequivocally conclude that nuclear material was not diverted from the site" (2009 document from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the federal so-called "watch dog" agency). Together with other Cold War dump sites across the country, the U.S. government is looking at an estimated $350 billion price tag to clean it all up.

Patty Ameno has spent the last quarter century fighting to clean up nuclear waste in and around Apollo, her hometown in western Pennsylvania.
