There never was a good war or a bad peace. ~Ben Franklin

Dear Friends:

Undoubtedly, you have read or heard statements, made this week by officials who helped to establish the U.S. torture program, claiming that torture led to the capture and killing of Osama bin Laden. This is untrue, and today NRCAT Board President, Linda Gustitus, wrote an op-ed articulating both our conviction that torture is always wrong and the truth that torture is counterproductive for intelligence gathering and national security (link available soon on our website). NRCAT also issued this press release calling for a full accounting of the facts through establishment of a Commission of Inquiry. Given the claims of the torture proponents, they should not be afraid of the facts.

Please help us respond to the claims of the torture proponents by writing a letter to the editor of your local paper.

NRCAT has prepared talking points and advice on writing and sending a letter. Please write your letter today to ensure that this critical perspective is visible in your local media.

Please help assure that the claims made by the proponents of torture do not go unanswered. We know that torture is immoral and counterproductive. Our government’s use of torture provided a major recruiting tool for al Qaeda and cost us the good will of countless people who could have helped locate bin Laden years earlier. By sending a letter, you can join other people of faith and good will from around the nation who will be writing their own letters. Together, we can forcefully push back on the perception that the use of torture is acceptable.

Please join this effort – talking points for your letter are provided on the NRCAT web site.

Thank you for your commitment to ensuring that U.S.-sponsored torture never happens again.

Sincerely,

Linda Gustitus, President
Rev. Richard Killmer, Executive Director
