Event Description

American Radical Thought

a course taught by Davis D. Joyce, for Peace House-Tulsa (in the Church of the Restoration, Unitarian Universalist, 1314 N. Greenwood Avenue).

Offered in five sessions, on Sunday evenings at 7:00 PM, beginning September 6th, 2009. (Each session will last from an hour and a half to two hours.)

The first session (September 6) will be an "Introduction," and will include definitions/reasons/methods, making all the readings available,
and, of course, getting acquainted.

The second session (September 13) is called "Foundations," and will include excerpts from the writings of Thomas Jefferson (including, of course, the truly foundational Declaration of Independence), Thomas Paine, Henry David Thoreau, and Martin Luther King, Jr.

The third (September 20) is "Zinn," and will focus on the life and writings of Howard Zinn, who is both a radical and a historian of American radicalism. (Note: For reading, see below.)

The fourth (September 27) is "Peace," and will include excerpts from the writings of William Lloyd Garrison, Adin Ballou, Ammon Hennacy, Alice and Staughton Lynd, Thomas Hayden, and "Student Radicals" (for example, the Port Huron and Weatherman statements).

The fifth and final session (October 4) is "Oklahoma," and will deal with some successful examples of organizing here in our own state over the years; there will also be an effort at summary and conclusion.
(Note: For reading, see below.)

The readings for sessions two and four will be photocopied from American Radical Thought: The Libertarian Tradition, edited by Henry J. Silverman. For session three, my book, Howard Zinn: A Radical American Vision, will be the reading. And four session five, selections from my two books of "alternative views" of Oklahoma history, "An Oklahoma I Had Never Seen Before:" Alternative Views of Oklahoma History, and Alternative Oklahoma: Contrarian Views of the Sooner State, will be the
focus.

The total cost for the course will be $55. Please RSVP to Joni LeViness at the Peace House-Tulsa or by email myths16 [insert symbol] cox.net or by telephone (918) 231-2514.

(Please note that if we don’t have at least 15 people register for the course, we won’t be able to do it.)
