Event Description

Kathy Kelly, noted peace activist and three time Nobel Peace Prize Nominee, is coming to Oklahoma City on June 29th. She has just returned from Islamabad, Pakistan. She has been described as "probably the most respected leader in the American peace movement."

She will be speaking at the Church of the Open Arms, 3131 N. Pennsylvania Avenue, in Oklahoma City, at 7 pm. Call (405) 376-3077 or (405) 525-9555 for further information.

Kathy Kelly, 57, of Chicago, IL, helped initiate Voices in the Wilderness, a campaign to end the UN/US sanctions against Iraq. For bringing medicine to Iraq in open violation of the UN/US sanctions, she and other campaign members were notified of a proposed $163,000 penalty for the organization, threatened with 12 years in prison.

Voices in the Wilderness organized 70 delegations to visit Iraq in the period between 1996 and March 2003.

She visited Gaza during Israel’s “Operation Cast Lead” assault (2009) and spent a month in Pakistan, in 2009, writing eyewitness accounts of war’s impact on civilians.

Kathy Kelly co-ordinates Voices for Creative Non-Violence (www.vcnv.org), a campaign to end U.S. military and economic warfare.

As a war tax refuser, Kathy hasn't paid federal income taxes since 1980.

Topic of her Talk:
"A Better World: Our Urgent Mandate"

Her visit is co-sponsored by the Church of the Open Arms, in OKC, and the Peace Education Institute, also in OKC.
