A good review of Richard Gregg's book "The Power of Nonviolence" (assigned reading for TPF membership, fall 2021). The recommended edition is the one with the introduction by James H. Tully. Here this lecture from 2018 by James H. Tully, at Queen Mary University, emphasizes how the above book, about Gandhi's "satyagraha" (truth-power) was the go-to text for peace activists from the mid-1930s to the early 1960s.

9 Arrested in Good Friday Protest Against Drones at Hancock Air Base in NY - Top U.S. & World Headlines — April 17, 2017

In New York state, nine peace activists were arrested on Good Friday at a protest outside the Hancock Air Base in Syracuse, New York. The activists blocked the entrance to the air base by tying themselves to crosses resembling drones. This is Charley Bowman of Buffalo Peace Center.

"Good Friday commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus. Recognizing that 70 percent of our nation identify as Christian, we come to the gates of the Hancock drone base to make real the crucifixion today. As Jesus and others were crucified by the Roman Empire, drones are used by the U.S. empire. In Roman times, crosses loomed over the community to warn people that they could be killed whenever the empire decided. So, too, our drones fly over many countries, threatening extrajudicial killings of whoever happens to be in the vicinity."

Hessel joined the French Resistance during World War II, was caught by the Gestapo and sent to the Buchenwald concentration camp. He escaped during transfer to Bergen-Belsen and later helped draft the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights. In 2010, he became an unlikely best-selling author when his pamphlet-length book, "Time for Outrage," sold millions of copies around the world and helped inspire protests like Occupy Wall Street. As the movement spread in the fall of 2011, Hessel explained to Democracy Now! why he was encouraged by nonviolent resistance.

Israeli Judge Clears Military for 2003 Killing of Rachel Corrie - Democracy Now! Headlines

An Israeli judge has cleared Israel’s military of responsibility for the killing of the U.S. peace activist Rachel Corrie. A 23-year-old college student, Corrie was crushed to death by an Israeli army bulldozer in Gaza nine years ago. She was standing in front of a Palestinian home to help prevent its demolition. Today’s ruling came in a wrongful death civil suit brought by Corrie’s family, with the judge rejecting any negligence on the part of the driver and finding that Corrie’s death resulted from "an accident she brought upon herself." Corrie family attorney Hussein Abu Hussein denounced the verdict.

Hussein Abu Hussein: "This verdict distorts the strong evidence presented in court and contradicts fundamental principles of international law with regard to protection of human right defenders. In denying justice in [the] Rachel Corrie killing, this verdict speaks to the systematic failure to hold the Israeli military accountable for continuing violation of basic human rights."

The ruling follows an earlier internal Israeli army investigation that also exonerated the bulldozer drivers. The Corrie family had been seeking a symbolic $1 in damages, as well as legal fees.
