"So far, there haven’t been any sanctions [imposed on Israel]. But there could be sanctions. And there’s an obvious way to proceed. There has been for years, and it has plenty of support. In fact, Amnesty International called for it during the Cast Lead operations. That’s an arms embargo. For the U.S. to impose an arms embargo, or even to discuss it, would be a major issue, major contribution. That’s the most important of the possible sanctions.
And there’s a basis for it. U.S. arms to Israel are in violation of U.S. law, direct violation of U.S. law. You look at U.S. foreign assistance law, it bars any military assistance to any one country, unit, whatever, engaged in consistent human rights violations. Well, you know, Israel’s violation of human rights violations is so extreme and consistent that you hardly have to argue about it. That means that U.S. aid to Israel is in—military aid, is in direct violation of U.S. law. And as Pillay pointed out before, the U.S. is a high-contracting party to the Geneva Conventions, so it’s violating its own extremely serious international commitments by not imposing—working to impose the Geneva Conventions. That’s an obligation for the high-contracting parties, like the U.S. And that means to impose—to prevent a violation of international humanitarian law, and certainly not to abet it. So the U.S. is both in violation of its commitments to international humanitarian law and also in violation of U.S. domestic law. And there’s some understanding of that."

Documentary on the forced exodus of Palestinians from their homeland, film produced by Al Jazeera in 2008, to mark 60 years since the founding of the state of Israel, underwritten by the United Nations, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

In the first video installment, the British role is detailed, over the course of 30 years of British rule, explaining how the Jewish population in Palestine rose from only 50,000 in 1908 to 500,000 by 1948. On 19 April 1936, the Palestinians launched a national strike to protest against mass Jewish immigration into the Palestinian homeland and what they saw as Britain’s alliance with the Zionist movement. The British responded with force. During the six months of the strike, over 190 Palestinians were killed and more than 800 wounded.

As the Palestinian revolt continued, Britain’s response hardened. Between 1936 and 1937, the British killed over 1,000 Palestinians; and committed crimes such as ethnic cleansing and collective punishment.

In the face of Jewish terrorist attacks designed to hasten the departure of the British, attacks which killed some 37 British military police, the British eventually capitulated, abandoning their mandate over Palestine and handing it over the the United Nations.

In the second video installment, how the United Nations made a complete hash of it, allowing hundreds of thousands --perhaps 700,000 people-- to be forced out of their homes and out of their homeland. On 29 November 1947, the UN General Assembly met to devise a plan for the partition of Palestine. UN Resolution 181 divided Palestine into an Arab and a Jewish state, with Jerusalem as an international city. The Jewish state was granted 56 percent of the land, previously considered part of the Palestinian homeland. Israeli paramilitaries seized yet more land with impunity.

Swedish diplomat Count Folke Bernadotte was appointed as the UN Mediator in Palestine. On 17 September, 1948, the day following his UN report, Count Bernadotte was assassinated in Jerusalem, by members of the Jewish Stern gang.
