One Nation Flag LogoPlans are under way for a productive rally that will have far-reaching effects. The coalition is growing as more organizations come together to raise a united voice to stop wasting our money and political capital, stop endangering the lives of our US service troops, and stop driving more people in Afghanistan and Pakistan to seek refuge with extremist groups.

Help make our Tulsa event a success, to be held in tandem with the October 2 "One Nation Working Together" rally in Washington. We hope it will be the beginning of a new, united push toward peace and a stable economy.

Everyone is welcome!
This event also falls on the commemoration of Mohatma Gandhi's birth.

Bring Our War $$ Home Rally -- Rebuild America
When:
Saturday, October 2, 12:00 noon - 2:00 p.m.

Where:
E 41st St & S Yale Ave, Tulsa, Oklahoma 74135
On October 2nd we will support the One Nation Working Together rally
in Washington D.C. with a local rally outdoors at the corner of 41st
& Yale, the most central and busiest intersection of the city. One
of Poor People's Campaign Rallythe largest coalitions of progressive organizations in our lifetime has come together to demand a people's agenda from our government. This gathering on 10.2.10 provides an important opportunity for peace and anti-war activists to work closely with and support other activists across the progressive political spectrum, to spread our message and
voice our demands:
  • Cuts in military spending to fund human needs
  • Peace abroad and renewable energy at home
  • Bring the troops and War dollars home now
  • Jobs and economic recovery at home
We must create a people's movement for peace and justice that will transcend the October 2nd event so that a united voice expresses our concerns over the din of the media. We need our local communities to be heard, so that appropriate actions are taken by our Government officials.

It was the people united that moved the Civil Rights Bill into law. It was people protesting in millions across the United States in 1969 that brought the Vietnam War to an end. It was the people united in the 1920's that finally brought about passage of the 19th Amendment for a woman's right to vote. Every human rights law written in the United State of America is as a direct result of people standing in solidarity and demanding justice.

Join us on October 2!

Just weeks after a USA Today/Gallup poll showed support for the Afghan War was plummeting, a new Associated Press-GfK poll shows the trend continuing, with 58 percent of Americans now firmly opposed to the war.

"All of the questioned showed a trend toward greater opposition to the
war and greater pessimism about the war. It seems that, nearly nine
years after the US invasion of Afghanistan, war exhaustion is driving
Americans to increasingly call for a pullout."

Circle Cinema screens controversial film on nuclear weapons, on the
evening of Friday October 1st “COUNTDOWN TO ZERO” - with Skype chat
with Valerie
Plame Wilson.

Opens 10/1/10 - Runs through 10/7/10

COUNTDOWN TO ZERO traces the history of the atomic bomb from its origins to the present state of global affairs: nine nations possess nuclear weapons capabilities with others racing to join them, with the world held in a delicate balance that could be shattered by an act of terrorism, failed diplomacy, or a simple accident. Written and directed by acclaimed documentarian Lucy Walker (Devil’s Playground, Blindsight), the film features an array of important international statesmen, including Jimmy Carter, Mikhail Gorbachev, Pervez Musharraf and Tony Blair. Magnolia Pictures is releasing the film in North America; HISTORY™ has North American broadcast rights. The film was produced by Academy Award® winner and 2009 nominee Lawrence Bender (Inglourious Basterds, An Inconvenient Truth) and developed, financed and executive produced by Participant Media, together with World Security Institute.

The uncontested star of “Countdown to Zero” is former CIA undercover operative Valerie Plame Wilson. She will take questions via Skype opening night.

Enjoyed the film "Countdown to Zero" very much myself, as did two friends who saw it with me this evening. The negative reviews of the film turned out to be very tendentious.

The film very well could be the shot in the arm that the anti-nuclear movement needs. It's certainly topical, given the new START treaty that needs to be ratified in Congress.

Some great montages, and some great soundtracks to go with. There is one very long sequence of U.S. military hardware going awry, invariably ending with explosions: an impressive sequence of the film, providing a cautionary tale for devotees of all things technological, and/or all things military.

The film acknowledges Israel as a nuke power, but actually speaks the words only once. The only other two mentions of Israeli nuclear power are in the graphics, including one graphic that may well low-ball the number of nuclear warheads in Israel's possession. Don't blink, or you'll miss them. There is zero discussion of the other topical issue today in nuclear disarmament circles: the prospect of creating at least a nuclear-free Middle East.

On the whole, the burden of nuclear disarmament is on the U.S. and Russia, with 98% of the world's nuclear arsenal. Gorbachev and even Yeltsin, as well as Medvedev are all portrayed in a favorable light. Gorbachev probably has the best line in the film.

This is a post-Cold War film, but it only scratches the surface of the controversies and inconsistencies of U.S. nuclear posture. As the reviewer said for the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, the film is "fuzzy on the details" about how to get to zero nukes. You can't expect too much from a film, I guess.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go listen to some more Radiohead. Maybe while I'm reading Johnathan Schell's The Seventh Decade.
