Occupy Tulsa members join anti-war demonstration

Members of the Occupy Tulsa movement and Tulsa Peace Fellowship joined forces Saturday to protest the United States' military presence in Iraq and Afghanistan.
About a dozen people stood on the corner of 41st Street and Yale Avenue holding signs that read "U.S. OUT OF AFGHANISTAN" and "Honk for a Peaceful New Year."
"For me, personally, it's about what is happening with the talk on the news about Iran, that we are probably going to go to war with them, or possibly," said Stephanie Lewis, 43. "It's really scary to me to know that we can actually keep going through these wars that are basically over oil."
Saturday's joint demonstration, which ran from noon to 2 p.m., was put together by Mark Manley.
Manley, 60, is the incoming president of Tulsa Peace Fellowship. The group holds an anti-war protest on the corner of 41st Street and Yale Avenue on the first Saturday of every month.
"I'm a member (of Occupy Tulsa), and I mentioned it to some of my friends in Occupy Tulsa, and we all decided to come down here," Manley said. "We are both against wars."
Saturday's group of protesters was evenly split between members of the Occupy Tulsa movement and Tulsa Peace Fellowship.
Manley said he's ashamed of America's imperialistic ways.
"My country goes over and slaughters people for no reason," he said. "Osama bin Laden is dead, most of his organization is dead, and we're still not coming home from Afghanistan."
The Occupy Tulsa movement began in October in response of the Occupy Wall Street protests in New York City. That movement, sparked by the financial crisis of 2008, advocates, among other things, accountability from those they believe responsible for the financial upheaval.
Tulsa Peace Fellowship has been in existence for many years, Manley said.

There was also coverage in a short video clip this evening on Channel 8 News, with reporting and videography by Elizabeth Matthews. At least some people saw it tonight, although at this point, the video clip is not archived to their webpage.

For the record, the Tulsa Peace Fellowship was formed in the waning years of the Vietnam War, in the early 1970s, according to information from Terry Luce, one of the earliest members of the group. TPF was revived in the run up to the illegal invasion and occupation of Iraq, with protests at the corner of 41st & Yale starting in the Fall of 2002, before the beginning of hostilities. Terry and his wife Nancy Moran continue to serve on the TPF Advisory Group.
Look for a new article by Nancy Moran in the Tulsa World. Possibly tomorrow.
We also hope to see at least some members from Occupy Tulsa join us tomorrow, 7th Jan 2012, for the regularly-scheduled antiwar demo, at the corner of 41st & Yale, from 12 noon to 2 pm, sponsored by TPF.
Occupy Tulsa will be joining the Tulsa Peace Fellowship to march peaceably in the MLK annual parade, attempting to raise the profile of peace activism and non-violence in Tulsa.
