These pipelines move tar sands oil from the Alberta tar sands (itself an ecological nightmare). The pipelines carry diluted bitumen (dilbit), or sand-laden tar cut with natural gas to make it flow; then it is heated and pumped, with substantial wear on the pipeline. Under a portion of the pipelines: the Ogallala aquifer, that took billions of years to accumulate, at risk of now of contamination from the toxic dilbit.
