Japan's Quake Could Have Irradiated the Entire US

By Harvey Wasserman, Editor

Had the massive 8.9 Richter-scale earthquake that has just savaged Japan hit off the California coast, it could have ripped apart at least four coastal reactors and sent a lethal cloud of radiation across the entire United States. The two huge reactors each at San Onofre and Diablo Canyon are not designed to withstand such powerful shocks. All four are extremely close to major faults.

All four reactors are located relatively low to the coast. They are vulnerable to tsunamis like those now expected to hit as many as fifty countries.

To make the claim of Crimes Against Humanity [in the legal sense], you would have to be able to prove that they did not make every reasonable effort to protect human life or that they acted in reckless disregard of risk to human life. We may know that is true, but the defense is simply that the Nuclear Industry engineered the plants to standards the engineers -- including the government authorities -- said was more than adequate. How can you prove they knew they were unsafe?

Now if you mean Crimes Against Humanity in a moral sense, that is a no-brainer, and most people probably agree to that. It sounded like you were calling for a legal case, though.
